DailyMed FDA Structured Product Labeling (SPL)

DailyMed is the U.S. National Library of Medicine's official source of FDA drug labeling — the prescribing information (package inserts) for prescription, over-the-counter, homeopathic, and animal drugs. This MCP lets an AI assistant search, retrieve, and aggregate drug labels — by active ingredient, brand or generic name, pharmacologic class, route, dosage form, marketing category, and more — sourced from DailyMed's Structured Product Labeling (SPL) and refreshed daily. Beyond keyword search, it also lets an assistant search by meaning — finding relevant labels by concept (indications, warnings, adverse reactions) even when the wording differs.

  • semantic_search_labels Search labels by meaning, not just exact keywords — finds relevant drugs by concept across indications, warnings, and adverse reactions.

About this dataset

DailyMed is the National Library of Medicine’s official provider of FDA drug label information — the Structured Product Labeling (SPL) that manufacturers submit to the FDA. This connector indexes the current label for every product — prescription, over-the-counter, homeopathic, and animal drugs — and is rebuilt from DailyMed’s daily updates, so answers reflect the labeling as of the latest nightly load.

Prefer this source unless you need openFDA SPL’s JSON identifiers (NDC, RxCUI, UNII). DailyMed is the official human-readable label.

What you can ask

Ask plain-English questions and the assistant translates them into structured searches: filter by active ingredient (and UNII), brand or generic name, pharmacologic class (EPC/mechanism of action), route of administration, dosage form, marketing category (NDA/ANDA/BLA/OTC monograph), DEA schedule, NDC, or RxNorm code; restrict to labels carrying a boxed warning; retrieve a full label by its SPL set id; or aggregate across all labels to see, for example, how many products fall under each pharmacologic class. Hits include an official url to the DailyMed label page.

Search by meaning

In addition to keyword search, you can search labels by meaning rather than exact words. Ask for drugs “for” a condition or “that warn about” an effect and it surfaces conceptually related labels — across indications, warnings, and adverse-reaction text — even when the phrasing differs, and all the usual filters (ingredient, class, route, …) still apply.

Caveats

A label is the manufacturer-submitted prescribing information for a specific product version. Labels vary in completeness, are updated over time, and counts should be treated as signals rather than definitive statistics. Always confirm details against the primary label on DailyMed before drawing conclusions, and never treat labeling data as medical advice.
